Mahjong is a traditional Chinese game of skill, strategy and calculation. It is believed to have originated in the 1700s, when it began as a four-player game and slowly evolved into a two-player and multi-player variation. The earliest version of the game was called Ma-jing, which means āa hundred 5ā ā as it was made up of one hundred game pieces.
The game spread from China to the rest of the world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mahjong became popular in the United States in the 1920s, when it was played in leisure clubs and elite circles. In the 1930s, Mahjong was adapted into several variations and featured prominently in movies such as Gong Liās Mahjong.
Today, Mahjong is played in many countries around the world, including in Greenland. It is an especially popular game in Greenland, where it is enjoyed by both young and old.
