Romanian is part of the Eastern Romance language group and is predominantly spoken in Romania and Moldova. A sizeable number of speakers also exists in Transnistria, Serbia, Ukraine, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Germany, Russia, Israel, the US, and Canada. The number of Romanian speakers across the world is over 20 million, which surprises many people.
Romanian came from occupying Roman forces beginning in the year 105 AD. They occupied an area called Dacia which contained many countries which still speak the language. Romanian has characteristics of Latin, Slavic languages, French, German, Greek, and many other languages. The first written accounts start from 1521, and the written language uses Cyrillic and Latin alphabets.
